Are you someone that frequently gets headaches?
Is your medicine cabinet stockpiled with over-the-counter pain medications?
Do you feel like your headaches are constantly interfering with your daily life?
Throughout this blog, we often visit the fact that common does not mean normal in regards to your health. This is especially true when it comes to headaches, one of the chief complaints stated by individuals to medical providers around the world.
Currently, pain relievers are the most common approach to headaches. However, if you are someone who suffers from frequent headaches, like I once did, being dependent on pain medication simply does not cut it.
The Hidden Cause of Headaches
According to the World Health Organization (2016), “Headache disorders, characterized by recurrent headaches, are among the most common disorders of the nervous system.”
This is where chiropractic comes into play! After all, chiropractors are masters at detecting and correcting interferences to the nervous system. We call these interferences or misalignments, subluxations.
We know that the main cause for headaches are, in fact, subluxations; not a lack of pain medication. Subluxations affect the nerves within your system, as well as decrease your blood flow, resulting in pain and discomfort. But just because you feel tension up top, does not mean that these misalignments are present in the upper neck. They could actually be occurring in your lower back resulting in a ripple affect.
Chiropractic care can benefit individuals greatly who suffer from frequent headaches, and exposure to the three “T’s”. Not because chiropractic is a “treatment” for headaches, but because your chiropractor’s job is to detect and correct misalignments so your body can better self-heal and self-regulate.
In the instance of headaches, the chiropractor locates the primarily location of misalignment, adjusts that area, which allows your body to return proper blood flow. Then the affected nerves are able to turn down the pain “alarm” volume.
Only a few years ago, I suffered from headaches that would easily last a week or more. Thanks to a wellness-focused chiropractor and the education I received on the body’s amazing ability to self-heal and self-regulate, my headaches greatly reduced after just 2 appointments. However, it is important to note that my journey with chiropractic did not stop just because my pain did. Chiropractic has been an important preventative and wellness model for me. I am very happy to say that I have not taken a single pain medication since I began care. As soon as I feel a headache coming on, a chiropractic adjustment, rest, and ensuring hydration is all I need. -Lauren
